 |
As part of kindergarten's introduction to various art forms, kids get to experience using modeling clay to create a variety of sculptures. First, kids learn to form a ball, a pancake, a cube, a pyramid and a worm (a long, rolled out tube). They roll, flatten, pinch, and practice fine motor skills. Once students experience the basics of 3D form, they are allowed to use popscicle sticks to create whatever type of sculpture they would like.
Because sculptures are temporary (but the modeling clay is available as a "free choice" option all year long, along with drawing paper, books, texture plates, stencils, and building supplies), a key component to the success of this lesson is creativity and communication. I ask the students to express their ideas to myself and to each other. Helping students to articulate their ideas successfully is an essential skill that art supports. Students also love to discuss their projects and help each other throughout this lesson- bringing in some beginnings to project collaboration.
