Day of the Dead Papel Picados
Thursday, October 27, 2011 4:41 PM -0400By: Geena Teodecki
In 3rd grade, we do a unit on Mexican art and folk art. This unit begins with the appropriately timed Day of the Dead celebration. Students learn about Day of the Dead, and learn about Mexican culture. We read books, look at images and videos, and create art inspired by Mexican folk art. Students create Day of the Dead skull (or calavares) masks for wearing or decoration (another post to come). Then, if they have time before November 1st (the Day of the Dead), students can make a papel picado banner. literally "punched paper." These banners hang for celebrations and holidays in Mexico (not limited to Day of the Dead). They are delicate, colorful, festive, and beautiful. Students discuss symmetry and learn to use a new material with this lesson (cut tissue paper). These are some images of Ms. Endrey's class's papel picado banners hanging in the 500 lobby stairwell!
