2nd grade learns about fossils and dinosaurs in the beginning of the year. I tie in a lesson about drawing using basic shapes and directions, and another lesson about using non-traditional painting techniques, as well as collage. The lesson goes like this:
- Discuss dinosaurs and review science facts.
- Choose a dinosaur you want to draw and break into basic shapes, adding details and using drawing aides (such as images and step by step directions.
- Color in dinosaur ever so slightly with washable black marker.
- Add water with paintbrush. Watch amazing tones and shades appear. Probably yell "wow!"
- Let dry.
- Cut dinosaur out.
- Brainstorm dinosaur environment and create collage.
- Glue dinosaur into collage environment.
- Maybe read a National Geographic book about dinosaurs.
- Be proud of yourself and your amazing dinosaur!
