2nd grade learns about fossils and dinosaurs in the beginning of the year. I tie in a lesson about drawing using basic shapes and directions, and another lesson about using non-traditional painting techniques, as well as collage. The lesson goes like this:
  • Discuss dinosaurs and review science facts.
  • Choose a dinosaur you want to draw and break into basic shapes, adding details and using drawing aides (such as images and step by step directions.
  • Color in dinosaur ever so slightly with washable black marker.
  • Add water with paintbrush. Watch amazing tones and shades appear. Probably yell "wow!"
  • Let dry.
  • Cut dinosaur out.
  • Brainstorm dinosaur environment and create collage.
  • Glue dinosaur into collage environment.
  • Maybe read a National Geographic book about dinosaurs.
  • Be proud of yourself and your amazing dinosaur!
